my mom simply dont see any reason for it.i've stocked up on a few items for short term power outages.like oil lamps.2 different types of lanterns and flashlights.needless to say.that she didnt saything.but i could tell that she was greatfull, and thankfull for that.mainly when it got dark out.

Every family should have code phrases and signals such as special signals outside the home such as a specific light that should only be on in an emergency to notify unsuspecting family members etc...

We have ONE we took from the title of a 60s post apoc novel, if we send the text or E mail or pager or radio message "AB" our entire family knows what to do and here to go.

Yeah every time I mention being prepared, she tells me I'm crazy, and said nothing's going to happen. She was very happy for the use of my generator a couple months ago though... We only had power out a couple hours, but still. Could have been longer.
Needless to say, she doesn't question it any more. Doesn't help me either, but no more sarcasm is nice lol.

I've seen on TV and YouTube that some people have a code phrase for bugging out; this seems a little silly to me, but to each their own. I do wish my wife and I had more codes in place than the hand signs and the C&R though. The trick is getting things you'll remember without a whole lot of practice, and that aren't phrases you'll find yourself wanting to commonly use.

One episode of DDP they actually showed a couple who learned some rare near dead language to communicate during a home intrusion without spilling the beans to any intruder. Perhaps its something for you to consider ? It does not even have to be a super rare one, just something uncommon to where you live like Hungarian or something since you're in the US. Though its more useful to learn something less common that opens a larger pool of information to you if there is no likelihood anyone knows this language that you will encounter. So things like Chinese, Korean, German, Russian, Thai, Italian or Spanish would be great if you live in an area where few to no people speak the language you choose.

I think would be useful to have a phrase in ones own language that gives away distress to the receiver and what response is needed but not anyone listening in. @Gazrok definitely has that same Idea in his SHTF phrases.

yeah, code phrases in one's own languages is so easy.for example.a person could call someone else.and say,i bet the farm can't guess where i am..and of course, that could tell them, that its not safe to come home. or to meet them at a specific location.to a number of other things.

i cant help but wonder,to how good our moms would get along..lol
