I see everyones' points, and largely agree with them.....but still I have to play the devil's advocate.....if for no other reason than to explore areas outside my comfort zone.

These kids seem to be utterly lacking in education and knowledge that was important when I was in school, so I think they're dumb.

At the same time, I'm an older person who struggles to understand computer stuff (I'm not alone here. There are actually pads and laptops geared toward senior citizens, like the Grandpad), and they think I'm stupid because I struggle with things like Twitter, Wattpad, Blogging, and so on.

I learned business skills like how to type on an IBM Selectric typewriter, how to set type for a printing press in industrial arts, how to organize and use a Rolodex, and also how to use Gregg Shorthand.

All obsolete. I may as well be a steam engine repair mechanic.

So I wonder how much of this stupidity is actually stupidity....or if it is our older person's perception of stupidity seen through the lense of our obsolete education.

I get concerned when--by asking Suri any questions--we get instant answers, as seems that the computer does our thinking for us....and when I made my point to a young punk, he asked me if I still used a bow-drill to start a fire, or if I just used a cigarette lighter instead?

I didn't have an answer.

Kevin, are you equating intelligence with how well someone can play with an electronic Gizmo?
I think that anyone who depends on electronics for everything isn't very intelligent.

I understand, but I like to believe that I'm intelligent, yet I struggle with computers, smart phones, and other electronic devices.....so what does that say about me?

Unfortunately it is not just the young . . Tonight while at granny for dinner We turned it to FOX to watch Trumps speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Caregiver who is 20 years or so older than me sitting with granny tonight. . . What is the President 's wife's name? Who is that white haired man? Who are the Blue Angels?. . . Then she had to call her relatives to tell them that We were watching the Trump parade on the FOX channel.

To me, computers and other electronics devices are just tools. No different than a hammer or a crescent wrench.

All this excellent discussion just gave me a thought. I've said before how blacks have had 2 fatherless generations, whites 1 generation, & Hispanics are going into their first.

So my thought, what is the next step for the blacks in our country? By that, I mean this current generation have been raised by grandparents who still cared enough. With the next generation, the black babies will have nobody to raise them. Mom is a single druggie self-centered git. Who even knows who the father is. Granddad is also unknown, and grandma is living on welfare & unhappy that her kids are aging out & that's costing her some of her welfare. And she doesn't want to raise a baby because the welfare check increase won't be enough. So, where do the kids go? Foster care? Orphanages? Animal shelters? Dumpsters? Sold for body parts?

I'm not being racist, as I said whites are only 1 generation behind this. Seriously, I'd like everyone's thoughts on this.

Our gubmint in it's infinite wisdom has decided it was a good idea to pay women if they would force the fathers of their kids to stay away. And look at how well it is working. And no you are not a racist for pointing out the obvious. It slashes against all races. Children of all colors suffer from having no fathers in their life. Here is a novel idea. Lets pay women to get their men to help to raise their children? Kids in a stable family with BOTH parents there are almost always better off. Yah think the liberals would vote on something that would work? I doubted it. Maybe we need more conservatives who are interested in fixing problems.

I have a better idea; don't pay them at all. Why should a hard working responsible tax payer pay for some irresponsible deadbeat loser?

Aww, AD... I want everybody to get paid. In fact get paid a whole bunch!

And I want them to work and earn every penny of it. No work? No problem. Come back when you're hungry enough to be willing to work to pay for food to eat. Some might be amazed at how many people would suddenly enter the workforce if we did things this way again.

And yes, some would starve. We'll make sure to plant them in Potter's Field. That's ok. Maybe as a big group we can nominate all of them for a Darwin Award. That way they'll get their participation award.

Please....don't be shy on my account....tell me how you really feel. LOL

I acknowledge your points, but dismiss the color/race distinction. As I live in South Florida, race is a fuzzy concept, as everybody (including myself) seems to run a spectrum rather than fitting neatly into categories.

I believe kids should be raised by their parents (of course there are exceptions), rather than by daycare, sitters, foster care, and so on.

I believe in the family, and I believe that drugs, the decaying work ethic, and willingness of the government to provide financial support (in the form of what I name "chronic welfare") for multiple generations of people who won't work, got to school, or get a career.....will eventually lead this country down the path of ruin.

You and I do see things very differently in terms of what the government is for and what it should do, but even I--as liberal as I am for this forum--never believed that welfare and food stamps was intended to become a lifestyle that someone should aspire to.

I don't have an answer.

As for race being a fuzzy concept, did you see the story in National Geographic about the biracial twin girls born in Britain?

I don't believe that skin color has the importance that everyone attaches to it.....but I'm hardly impartial.

I have Native-American, Italian, probably Greek, Scots-Irish, Middle-Eastern, and Eastern European ancestory.

People tell me that I look Italian, as I have dark features and slightly olive skin....but also high cheekbones and (slightly) almond-shaped eyes.

And none of this means anything, until I have to fill out the Race section in medical paperwork or on the forms that I sign when I'm buying a gun.

My point is that we have to consider when and where race stops being the issue, as focusing on race not only plays into the hands of the racist, but also provides an excuse for the non-achiver.

Kevin, race wasn't the point of my post. Ignore it if you want, it's not important.

What is important is the degradation of the family. We first had families choosing to live on welfare. Then we had a generation where the dad left or was never present, so single moms raising kids. Then we had a generation of single moms so stuck in drugs/prostitution/whatever that they handed the kids to grandma (maybe a grandpa too?) to raise.

My point is this next generation, who will raise them? Mom is strung out on meth. Nobody even knows who dad is, might be one of a dozen or 3 dozen guys. Grandpa is unknown. Grandma is on welfare & a druggie & barely making it & doesn't care about the grandkids. Who raises these babies? I'm seeing tons of foster kids. I've seen lots of CASA volunteers wanted (court appointed special advocate). Is the gov't going to be raising this next group? I guess it won't change much, the last 2 generations have been raised funded by welfare, this is the same tax spending just via a different path.

It all started with: drugs, welfare, and an absent father.
