Well, it seems to be unanimous...my doctors and the hospital social worker all agree I need to move into an Assisted Living Center next month, and they have an approved one already picked out for me. According to the doctors, I am entering "end stage" COPD, emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disease. And I feel it...I am getting weaker, less energy, not as mobile, slowly losing weight no matter how many calories I take in, or how much fat & protein I pack away. The lung cancer is disappearing, at least they beat that! Well, everyone goes sooner or later, and I've had a good run. They tell me to figure on 1 1/2 - 2 years life expectancy, with likely the last 6 months of that to be spent in the hospital's in-house Hospice Unit.

The ALC ain't bad...ultramodern, has 24/7 on-call medical assistance, optional prepared meal delivery, wi-fi, cable & 42" flat screen in living room, 32" flat screen in bedroom, laundry service, shopping trips weekly, senior's center/recreation room, transportation to and from medical appointments, field trips twice a month (everything from museums to fishing trips in local state parks), all courtesy of payment by Medicare/V.A. - - not bad!

Then later, the Hospice awaits...brand new unit in the hospital itself, large private room, wi-fi, cable/flat screen on wall, 24/7 medical care, laundry service, meals/snacks, etc.. You just don't LEAVE once you're there! Again, courtesy of Medicare/V.A.

Well, as the old saying goes, "No one gets out of this life alive!"

Hope I get to vote in 2020 and see the election results!! If the damn Dumbocrats win, that'll probably kill me on the spot!!

It's hard to follow that post. Your right, non of us can prepare for the end of ones life that will prevent it. We can prepare so it ends somewhat on our terms if we are lucky. Don't give up hope and never listen to doctors always knowing what there talking about. A lot of it is guess work. Take care and enjoy the rest of your time here.

I am sorry for the bad news. But that is plenty of time to prepare for the afterlife. I don't want to start another argument over various beliefs, but there is no time like now to pursue this truth. Most people never have this long of a warning to prepare. Call it the 'ultimate prepping'.

They say there are few atheists on their death beds....

Sorry to hear about your health issues. I don't know if it's better to know when your time is up, or for it to be a surprise. I guess the one advantage of knowing when your time is near is that you could make amends if necessary, change or update your will and just get all your affairs in order.
This is also a good reminder for all of us to live as if this is your last day.

Great advice.

Good to hear the cancer is disappearing; sorry about the other issues. Glad they found you what sounds like a good place. Hope they treat you good and you get to enjoy your life to the fullest, however long it may be.

I’ve heard terrible things about the VA, and I’ve heard great things about the VA. I’m sorry that your time may be running short, but it sounds like you’re doing okay with the VA.

A good friend went through the exact situation you’re going through and the VA was great as far as he was concerned. His cancer (liver) didn’t go away, but it wasn’t as advanced as his COPD was. When his time came, it was quick and peaceful. I’ve been very thankful for that, and having heard some of the problems that the VA has had, I was thankful that he didn’t have to fight with them.

Hang in there my friend. Doctors are just like us - human - and it wouldn’t be the first time one has been wrong. We’ll be thinking good thoughts for ya!

I too am sorry about what your doctors outcome has given you.. . . You have touched a lot of peoples hearts. Given us all some really good information and other post that make ones think about their own lives in how they live. I hope you are able to continue you five us updates on your well being, Phil comes to mind, but I know he is no longer in it.

Biloxi V. A. Center is one of the best in the U. S. as far as I am concerned....never had any problems with them at all.

Thank you all for your support and comments. Wait 'til the ALC figures out I have a closet full of firearms, ammo, and air rifles/pistols!! (None of which are mentioned in their brochure or admissions paperwork!!) :tank::m4::rocket::ar15:

Don't mention them and put them into a locked wooden style cabinet, not a quality gun safe. Most of these facilities have rules against firearms / weapons. You will have housekeepers cleaning and occasional maintenance personnel roaming through your apartment. Buy a lockable wooden cabinet and install cheap gun safe inside. The reason for cheap gun safe is the weight of a good gun safe, Dead give away . Your apartment is not very likely to be broken into, so cheap is good.
