China floods Facebook with undeclared coronavirus propaganda ads blaming Trump

Chinese state media is flooding Facebook and Instagram with undisclosed political adverts whitewashing its role in the coronavirus pandemic and pinning blame on Donald Trump.

Three official news outlets – Xinhua, China Central Television and the Global Times – have targeted users across the world with promoted stories in English, Chinese and Arabic.

The ads, seen millions of times, extolled China’s efforts against Covid-19, downplayed its domestic outbreak, depicted Mr Trump as misguided and racist, and suggested that the virus might have originated in the US.

Yet all of them initially ran without a political disclaimer, allowing them to hide information about who they were targeting and sometimes letting them sidestep Facebook’s strict rules on political advertising.

It comes as the company struggles with severe temporary cutbacks in its content moderation staff, many of whom have been sent home on full pay to avoid infection.

“[China] has taken stringent and forceful measures, and turned the tide on coronavirus,” said one ad. “Trump’s disruption to China has severe consequences,” warned another.

Several focused on Mr Trump's insistence on using the term "Chinese virus", which has also been criticised by many Americans, while others highlighted uplifting statements by China's president, Xi Jinping. One trumpeted the potential role of traditional Chinese medicine.

They did SPREAD the virus to the world...and LIED about it...therefore not giving anyone a chance to prepare. They then didn’t allow our CDC access...and sent BAD DATA, which caused our first round of tests to be wrong.

They owe countries far more than a few ventilators!

It’s funny you blame the President for not doing enough soon enough when piglosi started the impeachment on the VERY DAY that the virus came to our shores...without China warning anyone that there was a virus killing people. There was not even ONE charge that was proven. NONE. Charges distracted the President and everyone else at a most critical time for our country. Even now with our President and so many other Americans working their asses off, piglosi isn’t working toward helping with this pandemic...she’s playing politics! Again, to the detriment of AMERICANS.

When the President acted the last of January to stop people who possibly had the virus from coming here, every Dem called him a racist and demanded he open the borders back up! Now dementia joe agrees, but back then called him names like the rest.

How can you say Hydroxychloroquine isn’t saving lives? It has already done it many, many times. Not only in our country, but other countries as well. The President isn’t lying. The media changes and edits. The news you watch is lying. President Trump did follow China and WHO advice for too long in the beginning when he said it would not be more serious than the current flu (which is estimated to hit as high as 63,000) and that it did not spread easily. That was the information dear China and their buddies WHO were giving out!

This country is a Republic. The President is not a ruler and certainly not in charge of everything. Governors of each state are...and mayors work with their Governor.

BTW, the mask shortage happened because the lowlife in office at the time didn’t replenish them when he used them in 2009-2010. And NY had a chance and the money to buy the ADVISED 16,000 Ventilators some years ago. They didn’t bother doing it. Wasted the funds on something else. Now it’s the President’s fault? Pfft.

Why would we work together with a government who has already cost us trillions and thousands of lives with their lies and omissions? Tell me you would work with someone a second time after they caused your business much harm. You wouldn’t.
