Sad. . . that is Years of not getting trimmed. If people don't want the responsibility of an animal, give it to someone else who can take care of it. I understand if someone gets older in their years or can not physically do it, but its still up to them to have someone come in to do it for them.

There's no excuse for that except for pure lazyness. There's only two tools needed for trimming hooves; nippers and a rasp. And it only takes about 10 minutes to trim the hooves. Along with owning any animal comes the responsibility to properly care for that animal. These people obviously shouldn't own any kind of animal.

How do you do the rear hooves? Horse just voluntary allows u work on em?
Not always. For some young horses it can be like a rodeo working on their feet. I trained all my horses to lift their feet on command. After awhile they get used to it. I've known people who had to put their draft horses in stanchions and tie their feet up, because they liked to drop their feet or lean while being worked on.

Never considered how much maintenance is involved with owning such an animal.

I've never done horses, but for my goats its only every two - three months depending. Most will let you just pick their hooves up and trim, but I have a couple on eery ones that have to be thrown down. If by myself, I just sit on and trim till its done but makes life easier when hunny and I can tag team. When we had the donkeys, it was done quarterly. We got them as adults that rarely if ever had hooves taken care of. We had to basically tie their hooves up, but I was always on the front end of them trying to keep them calmed down.

I didn't get a chance to watch the video of Poly before work this morning so watched after. True transformation and happy he got to go to a good place. Warms your heart when there is a happy ending. I wish there was more of those happy endings to go around, but unfortunately there just isn't. I understand they are " just animals" like so many say, but even the animals we raise to slaughter get a good life before hand.

I agree about the positive ending. It's unfortunate that some people tend to fixate on the negative and are constantly looking for reasons to complain about the same things. Its like an endless cycle with no resolution. The media thrives off of it.

You rarely see positive occurrences headline in mainstream media.

This may be a stupid question but what about wild horses that once roamed this country? Did they just naturally wear down their hooves from daily activity?

I would imagine hooves like that would be death sentence for the animal in the wild.

Because of the wild horses activity, like wolves and coyotes its self trimming by being active.

Wild horses wear their hooves down naturally just by traveling long distances in dry, rough and rocky terrain.

A lot of people buy horses for their kids or as pets and know nothing about how to care of them. I've seen a lot of horses on rich pasture who founder and end up being crippled because the owners didn't know anything about proper feed and care. Every animal deserves to be well taken care of. If a person doesn't know how to properly care for a horse, or any other animal, then they shouldn't own it.
