Why would anyone? What perceived enhanced security do you think they would afford?

For the average theif, this is a deterrent. Anything to avoid losing what you have, while away.

The average thief just breaks a window or door jam in my experience

They aren't much more expensive at lowes or Home Depot now than the regular locks. I tend to side with Jim here, if you have Windows then you're not real secure. Personally I like Rottweilers and this,

My windows are secure. Just an added measure. AR doesn't work, when you're not there. Neighbors dogs were killed last week.

I don't have to worry about bump key here, our locks don't use normal keys plus our lock just don't unlock by using the simple turn of the key, then we have the dogs and other surprises ;) Also, our padlocks use similar keys.

Our keys look very similar to this

I purchased some of those too Maverick. Nice concept. We have surprises too...
Regular locks are becoming much too vulnerable.

Of course, the latest trend among quote average thieves, is to put JB Weld in unconventional lock key holes, to punish home owners for trying to defend their property while at work, etc.

This thread just reinforces the necessity of banding together post shtf. You need to be on guard 24/7, and one family just can't do that. I'm a big do it yourself er, and am pretty self reliant. Unfortunately, you have to sleep sometime. I'm working on getting more living quarters set up on the property here, just in case.

True words indeed Brent S

Unfortunately, you have to sleep sometime.

Always the bane of those wanting to be a LMOE (Last Man on Earth) type prepper.

Personally, my whole plan hinges on a group of folks wanting to survive well (and includes family and friends).

Right at the time of SHTF, I'll basically have one spare bedroom, and the crop room we could convert to sleep more, but it wouldn't take too much effort to convert stable stalls to rooms either.

On the bump proof locks, not really worth it in my opinion. If they are prepared enough to have these, then chances are, they are likely going to get in somehow, as you simply can't have windows and ensure you are completely impregnable. Because of the horses, there's usually almost always SOMEBODY home, so the other measures (dogs, firearms, and top/bottom bolt locks) should really suffice. For someone who's away a lot though, I can see the value in them...

I don't have the luxury to have someone at home all the time, so I need any advantage I can get. Short of a truck thru the wall, the doors are the way they are going to try and get in our place. I concur. No man stands alone.....

Where I live I've never locked any doors, not even sure where the keys are, and never take keys out of our vehicles. It helps when the nearest neighbor is 6 miles away and town (pop 800) is 20. I do lock the gate though, but that's more to keep the cows from rubbing against the gate and pushing it open.

We typically wouldn't have to lock the door during the day, but we do, just as we lived in the city for just SO long. Plus, it keeps any customers from accidentally going into the house door vs the shop door (even though it is painfully obvious to one who isn't an idiot....)

But the world is full of idiots.

So RiverRat, you don't have windows? For me, that was always the weakest link in our chain of defense. I have the security film on mine, but all that will do is slow them down. I have bars on the shop window at least, and good locks on the others. But, the glass doors out back are kind of a security pain. Only so much I can do there. The good news though, is there are porch doors before getting to that, from the outside, but they aren't as secure as I'd like (yet).

Of course, after they first break the windows, they'd now have to deal with the dog, and an armed household, which is 4 of us, all armed. So kind of a bad day for them.....

I do have windows, but a very good deterrent in each. It has been many years since we have not locked doors here. Even though we are in a very rural area. Goes to show the differing threat levels in each area. Good feedback.
