Has anyone made or researched any home protection booby traps? If so what are some good ideas to keep the bad guys away from my family, and supplies?

The problem with traps is that they generally aren't safe in "peacetime". So, they'll likely have to be put in place after the SHTF...

Some ideas though.....

Fake cover: If you have some open area between your perimeter and your home, this is a great idea. Basically, make something look like good cover, but really, it is made from easily pierced material (like shellacked paper mache). They think they are taking cover behind a small wooden wall, not really bothering to consider why it's there. Yet even small calibers go right through it. (for added fun, make a small footfall trap behind it (small, shallow dug out area, lined with metal caltrops, for example). So, not only is their "cover" false, but now they are howling in pain. (any of his comrades are going to think twice, hehe)

Strobe lights: (aimed at attackers) A simple, but highly effective tactic. It's almost impossible to aim while being strobed, however not too difficult if the strobes aren't facing you, but lighting up your targets.

Trip wire traps: great if done in an area they are likely to go through (gates, for example), go for lethal or crippling, or go home (fixed crossbow bolts (don't want to arm them), spring-loaded sharp, pointy things, etc.)

Pits: If you are in an area where you can dig, then these are great. Camouflage the top, line the bottom with lots of things that hurt (like sharp sticks), and you're golden. If you're really vindictive, make it look like previous victims dropped things (like a can of food, etc....but really, it's a can of food you've poisoned).

Note too self: Turn down Gazoraks "pit BBQ" invites. Lol

I took natural colored (tan) leftover roofing shingles and spent an afternoon pushing about 100 roofing nails though each of them (keeping the tan side up).Now I have enough to cover my driveway entrance as well as placing a couple under any lower level windows.Easily camo'ed with gravel, leaves, grass clippings etc.Oh yeah, almost forgot,I have a couple welcome mats made up as well ;).

takes note..always carry a magnet with me if i should vesit sharkbait
Or wear thick soled boots.Jim,you'd always be welcome here, just make sure to announce yourself well before the property line, lol.

That's pretty nice (trap link above), but could make it for WAY less than $40. Problem is, you'd want to wait until after the SHTF or the liability issues alone would make it a legal nightmare should someone trip it. (unless just using blanks for noise). Of course, even the blank would certainly make an intruder think twice about continuing on. (especially if a sign up saying "Live ammo used from this point forward").

Yes, it would be easy to make. The liability would be a major concern if using live ammo, which would be very foolish for anyone to use. But if using blanks it would let you know if someone was snooping around. I prefer using wireless IR detectors. http://www.absoluteautomation.com/dakotaalert/mursir/I have a few set up around my place that aleart me if someone is coming up my driveway or on any of the trails around my house.

I like the Dakota ones too. Researched them for ages before deciding. (after getting ones that simply did not work as advertised). Of course, SHTF wise, they take either batteries or plug in, so not bad to have other (post SHTF) options.

Same thing, we use for the driveway alert.

Some M18A1s set up at angles pointing outward from the house would be pretty nice. With enough forewarning you just wait until some bad guys or girls creep onto your property, hit the firing device and BLAMMO, what's left of their perforated carcasses gets blown out into the pasture; instant kibbles 'n gibs for the doggies to snack on! Just make sure you mind the "Front Toward Enemy" warning on the fronts.

Why don't you in the states turn to native-american traps? read about something the apache-indians used, small hole in the ground, just big enough for your foot to fit in,lined with sharp woodenspikes pointing slitly down, your foot goes easy down but pull it up in a panic, guess where you have the spikes???

Jontte,

Great idea in theory, but as Gaz mentioned, in peacetime they usually wind up harming someone. Can you imagine a guest stumbling around drunk at your bbq and "Swoooosh! Arrrrrgh!" they fall down into a spike filled pit? I mean, I enjoy nice meaty skewers just like the next man, but that would be a little bit much...

I.Kane
yeah,it could be something to lower to partymood I guess ;)

Haha...some non-lethal alternatives might be something to think about. Here's an thread about someone wanting to set up a tear gas grenade trap and some of the legalities of setting up such traps. Remember, we are a very litigious society.

There are several books out there on the subject. However, I like the real practicle application and detail from the book "The Patriots" . Very real and detailed use of booby traps.
