Bolt Cutters and Cordless Angle grinders

Odd subject for prepping or what?, but wait think about it, So many footpaths, cycle ways, access roads for utilities, private tracks, forestry access roads etc are ideal places for us to hide along or for us to use to bug out along rather than use the main highways and these are usually close off to the public by a metal barrier / gate secured only by a PADLOCK.

Looking for a place to rest overnight either under a Basha or in a Vehicle could be made much easier if you could access these rarely used lanes, tracks etc that provide access to pumping stations, reservoirs, cell phone masts, sewage works, by passed ancient roads, railway maintenance access points, old cemeteries, old road side quarries, small industrial units etc and again these utilities are often closed off to the public by a single barrier with a padlock attached.

In a similar vein have you noticed the proliferation of mini industrial units / estates built on the edges of many villages and small towns, often you find at least 20% of these units empty and available to rent, again they are normally secured by a chain link fence and a padlocked gate and providing there is no alarm system or cctv these facilities could also be ideal places to access with bolt cutters to hide your BOV in overnight.

All too often we see these gated closed lanes, tracks, paths and facilities and because they have a single padlocked gate we automatically discount them as useful to us, but be honest if we have a societal collapse who on gods earth is going to spend time, resources and man power to check the security of these rarely used or visited places.

Its worth adding a set of bolt cutters at least to your tools and a cordless 4.5 inch angle grinder would likely be another asset, some people use mini acetylene cutting torches as alternatives.

And our course such tools would be very handy AFTER TSHTF to access abandoned businesses etc to salvage essential supplies.

And yes I did get the idea from The Walking Dead

i already keep a one handed mini bolt cutter in the toolbox in the van..in which it's idea for anything no larger then a strand of barbed wire.on account it dont open enough for anything larger..and it's a lil bit more heavy duty then what i need for that...but i do need the larger bolt cutters for padlocks and chains.

I always carry bolt cutters (or as we used to call them "Federal master keys"). You can do more with a grinder but of course they can run out of power and they are loud.

One trick is to also carry your own padlock and re-lock the gate behind you, hopefully the next guy will move on because it's locked.

At least put the chain back up with the lock to look undesturbed. The spare lock is a good idea for security.

LOCK PICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then you don't need the extra lock. Its soooooo Easy People just take a second to learn how. It takes me less then 5 seconds to pick any master lock...

Over here the problem is that many locks are to BS3621 and similar specs with anti picking fittings installed, its like and extra set of levers or plungers.

those picks might not work over here with the new abloy locks....bolt cutters as a master key is quicker ;)

The only time govt here uses those is for actual secure facilities. 99% of used locks are the standard home depot style pad locks. All department bodies that I've been to have master-locks on most of their facilities. If it's a true secure facility you probably don't wanna be there anyway. I personally know of three police facilities that use standard padlocks for their secure gates and for the gun cages. Also their personal lockers are outside the facilities with padlocks and a lot of those officers keep their personal carry guns in those lockers. I'm not in any way saying go steal anything, my point is that barely anyone thinks that there stuff isn't safe once they add a cheap master lock...

I use the abloy protec2 the pl975 padlock w/lockitt chains for several areas of concern and is what I use for securing my steel gun cases that's secured to the frame of the truck using the torc anchor's from abloy.

Having always been a mil surplus fan I have picked up Swedish wire cutters that are like small bolt cutters , British wire cutters that the handles fold out to give you alot of leverage , a large pair of Swiss barbed wire cutters that can cutt fairly heavy stuff . I'll put bolt cutters on my list in the mean time I can cutt my way through a fence ig not the gate .
