Hi, new member so a little bit about myself. I'm from Georgia and have been prepping for about 5 years. I would like to meet more preppers around Bremen, Ga. I've never caught on how to build a prepper community while at the same time keeping the fact that I prep and have supplies a secret.
Also I would like to share an idea. Someone tell me if it sounds viable. Could we "gas mask" an entire house by duct taping the window and door cracks and invent a 40mm Nato approved filter to fit over the A C/heating duct into the house?

Howdy from down Columbus way!

Ah, the classic Preppers conundrum. LOL

I just build mine around relatives. Not an option for many people though.

Welcome from the top right corner of ga. I think the key to surviving any major disaster will have to involve a group of like minded people. Your thinking along the right track anyways.

Hi and welcome from Fin.

hmm,"gas masking the whole house",well here they actually recomend duct tape in makeing your place "air tight" in case of some freak accident involving
poisonuos gas,how secure it will be,that's beyond my knowledge, but it will give you some more time and time is a luxuory in a disaster.

howdy from a Texan .... and welcome to the forum and family...there's quite a few knowledgeable folks here that'll gladly tell ya what you need to know,or at least point ya in the right direction and/or give ya a good idea or 2..and by all means jump right on in with any replies you have on a topic.and start new topics if/when needed.

I'm new to the forums too, howdy! I have no idea if the duct tape trick will work. Our electricity company offers free home energy audits. One part is they do a 'blower door test'. It lowers the air pressure in the house causing outside air to come in that aren't sealed well. They walk around with a smoke stick and it reveals all the tiny drafts. They give you a detailed written report with a map showing you all the things you can do to seal the house. Call your electric co and ask if they offer something like this for free.

Even if you try the duct tape idea, don't forget your ducts in the attic, especially if you have attic access into the house. They could be cracked or leaking.

Blower door tests are awesome. They are great for finding leaks in a house.

A really tight house is easy to heat or cool, but you have to supply fresh air or the walls will mildew. I just wonder how hard it'd be to find a gas mask filter that you could fit to a 5 inch intake........

Now you are making me think.... lol....

This site is ss close as a prepper group as I would get . Set up your prepps as you need . Post TEOTWAWKI there may be a group form with You .

Good intro, Doc, and great thought-provoking question. Some houses will be easier to seal up than others, but I expect most anything's possible.

Howdy from west Texas. Welcome to the forums!

Great reply, Kex! I've never heard of a 'blower door test'. If they tried at my house, the whole place would be filled with smoke in about 2 minutes!

If you want ideas about gas masking a house, consider consulting Israeli government prep sites. The civilians always have to be prepared for gas attacks.

Personally, I think that you might be better off sealing in inner safe room than the whole house.

If I was going to do this, you might consider putting a window on the door and hanging a bird cage with pet finches outside of the window in your field of view...where you can see them.

Pet finches are cool to have, cheap, mostly quiet when compared to parrots, easy to take care of, and very susceptible to poison gas...more so than humans. They could be the literal canary in the coal mine and indicate whether there is poison gas in your house. Bear in mind that this finch idea will not work with anthrax, as birds are immune to it. Weapons of mass destruction based on anthrax spoors were pioneered by the former Soviet Union, and an accident caused about 70 people to die near the plant when the winds shifted. If anthrax concerns you, consider getting a vaccine and/or stockpiling ciprofloxin.

I, personally, have gas masks and new NATO filters, along with chem suits...but I tend to ignore certian valid threats simply because I think that prepping for them is futile.

Massive nuclear warfare with hydrogen bombs fall into this category. A cosmic collision with a black hole falls into this category. In my mind, so does constant chemical warfare.

VN and VX can persist for months in the environment, and are so toxic that they make sarin look like pepper spray.

I would don my suit and mask, hike out of the area, and hope for the best.

If you can, try to obtain atropine injectors and learn how to use them. Also, learn how to properly decon stuff. Bear in mind that some protective chemical suits only buy you a little time. After a while, gas will get through...and almost all war gasses can be readily absorbed through the skin, so a mask-only strategy seems futile to me.

FYI sarin, cyclosarin, soman, tabun, VX, VN, phosgene, chlorine, nitrogen mustard, sulfur mustard, and hydrogen cyanide are the most likely gasses, and all cause problems (such as chemical burns and/or death) with even small amounts of skin exposure.

Another possibility is sealing off an RV. An RV is made of metal, and it seems like it would be easier to seal off while--at the same time--giving you the ability to simply drive out of the contaminated area and you could bring a lot of stuff with you.

I, for one, won't live in a plastic bubble...but that's me.

I hope I was helpful.

Found another point to make about anyone concerned about chemical warfare.

The Soviets invented Novichuk agents, which are nerve agents up to 20 times more potent than VX or VN, whch are themselves about 5 times more potent than sarin.

These agents are, supposedly, easy to make and deploy, and will also go through a standard NATO filter because they are so potent.

There are also tons of it unaccounted for after the balkanization of the USSR.

I don't think I'll prep for that level of chem warfare because it seems so futile...but that's me.
