I would use my vehicles untill the fuel ran out. Then I'd rely on foot or horses for all travel. I have a pond and creek full of fish that should sustain us for good. Hunting for deer, elk, turkey and rabbits can be done from my front porch. They seem to like the salt blocks that are about 50 yards from my front door.....

if the world goes to hell in a handcart I cant see me travelling very far from home, a bicycle-which I've already got, or a donkey or a small horse(pack horse) would be useful for small localised journeys.

if and when it does go to shit,I don't think all cars and trucks are going to die,at least that is my thinking,,,if a car can survive a lightning strike I don't think a EMP is going to take them out maybe shut them down for a few minutes but not a complete kill,,,I imagine all the idiot lights will come on and maybe stay who knows for sure,,,,,,,,,,,if I can get my ducks all in a row I will have a under ground storage area big enough to park an ATV in,,,that should eliminate the walking problem,,,I will just need to be conservative on how much gas I use,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I wonder how long you can run a HONDA 350 Rancher on 1000 gal of gas?

Gas will Only last about 1.5 yrs, under good circumstances. Additives will help, but only so much. I think you're much more likely to have your ride stolen, and you killed for it, than to have problems with the fuel going bad.

you have a gloomy outlook,,,,I don't think there will be all that many folks around here after nuclear fallout, and if there is a EMP you can bet your bottom dollar that a nuclear war has come and gone,,,,,,,I just hope I can be ready in time

I don't see it as gloomy, more like realistic. I really believe the biggest threat we will face is from assholes that don't give a crap about you or your family and just want to take your resources. As far as being really ready, I don't know if there is such a thing. We will all have to use our wits and wing it as the situation calls for. I just hope we never see it in our lifetimes. I'd still rather put effort into preparing than not though. As far as an emp caused by nukes, I'd say we have a 50/50 chance of the sun vs man. Either way, if the grid goes down in the good ole US of A, we are in for a life changing event that I hope to never see.

looters and gangs are going to be a gimme ,I worry more about roving gangs ,they will come in force, the more remote you can get the better off you will be,,,and like you I hope it never happens

I agree with the gang threat being a lot worse than individuals looking for supplies. The best I can say is get a group of like minded people to work with to even the numbers out some.

the problem with like minded people,,,,finding them, you see as soon as you start talking about prepping most people most people think you are a nut,,,some who you thought were friends will go out of their way to avoid you,,,,,,,,,,,,so I keep it to myself for that reason

Me too, to an extent. A buddy of mine and I have talked about it, then I asked a client about it, who happens to be a doctor. That's 3 families. Now, it has slowly grown to 6. I mechanic, one builder (and a computer geek, me), one doctor, three with green thumbs, etc. everyone is at least a decent shot, several hunters, and now all prepping. The BOL has probably 10 full time families. The ones in our group will probably run like hell if it does hit the fan. Then, we can easily cut off access, or at least make it real hard to get in. River is there (backwater), lots of game there, plenty of garden space, etc.

I still hope we never need to use it, but my hopes aren't very high...

Whoops... I derailed my own train of thought. I was going to say that if you feel someone up over time, you'd be surprised at how many are truly interested in prepping.

Besides, most of our group knows I'm nuts already...

I have never subscribed to the "golden horde" theory- not in the UK anyway, British people aren't made that way, most will sit and wait and moan and say "the govt will save us", it will be a long time before they realise no one is coming to save them by then it is far to late for them.

Dats why I am a Diesel man my friend, I once used 7 year old diesel in my old Ford Van and it ran fine.

If the grid were to go down due to an EMP, many people wouldn't make through the first winter. If essential services were cut that would mean services like snow removal would be eliminated. Not many people would survive very long walking in knee deep snow in single digit or colder temps. From November to April roving gangs of walkers would be the least of my worries.

We had our first snow of the season last night: just a couple of inches, but it was a hard freeze. After I let the chickens out of their coop into the yard, I brought them some extra chopped corn and wild bird seed, for the extra calories to keep them warm, before I brought them fresh warm water. Later today I'll give them some table scraps as a supplement. It made me think: food and water, more than fuel, will run out first, for most people, and most of them will have no idea where to get more from, except for from you. What will you do if law enforcement or the military comes to "redistribute" the supplies you have "hoarded" to the hungry and thirsty?
