When I came back to the US to work after many years of working overseas I had to attend classes on how to manage American workers. I couldn't believe how far down hill the American worker has gone in this country. Then later I had to take classes on how to manage "millennial" employees. They were supposed to be treated special. Coming to work on time wasn't a high priority for them, they needed more personal time off. I said that I would treat everyone equally, young or old. Period. This was the beginning of the end for me. I retired early and have never been happier.
Except now with construction on the house I'm dealing with these babies again. By US standards I have a fairly decent crew now, after firing quite a few. They still don't come to work on time and almost always leave early. Construction on the house is going on 8 months now and we'll be lucky if it's finished by June.

In the IT departments of two different companies, I had people under me that would never have cut the mustard when I was their age. One guy would disappear for days, one time for weeks with no word. I did not have the power to hire and fire at that time and I could not believe my boss let the guy back in the building. Then later I had a guy that was so irresponsible I had to make a daily checklist of things he was supposed to do. He would check things off the list whether he did them or not. We were finding things he screwed up for years after he left. He was a "protected species" however (disability) and we had to let him hoist himself on his own petard. He quit then tried to back out of quitting... Hasta la vista, Baby!

We have one that likes to have family emergencies at least once a week. Cannot get to work on time to save her life. Another whom cannot find her backside with both hands, is 23 and still lives at home with mommy and daddy. Mommy works at another location, where daughter has a personality conflict with some one she steps in and raises heck. Mind you the girl is a wast of space. Then there are those still in college.......
I deal with those types on a daily basis. There's always something going on, always a reason why they were late - traffic, the dog, the kids, the car, a train, they forgot something - it goes on and on. Every week there's another emergency that of course just came up at the last minute. The truly terrible ones just don't show up one day and we never hear from them again.
I'm a millennial and I don't understand it. Sure, people who work deserve to get paid; they earned that money. But they don't deserve things. No one deserves things. You have to buy things with money and if you want money you have to work. It's a concept that it seems some of my millennial friends got to this age without ever being taught.
It's true the cost increase of some things has exceeded the wage increase over time, but I feel like we also just spend on a lot more things that we consider "needs" when they are really "wants." I have friends and coworkers who have bought things like apple watches and nice cars when they had only recently told me how they were getting on a budget and outlined their (actually reasonable) plan for financial stability.
