U.S. health officials are bracing for a devastating flu season this winter that many people won’t even be able to ward off with their annual flu shot.

The possibility of a “flu-pocalypse” is being talked about after record numbers of patients were diagnosed with influenza in Australia, whose flu season just ended. In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), a group of infectious disease doctors say that Australia’s vaccination against the flu was only effective 10 percent of the time this year.

I work in healthcare, and the flu shot is important (so is handwashing, respiratory protection, etc.).

People underestimate the flu, and they shouldn't.

Having the flu can predispose a person to a severe form of Parkinson's disease later in life. If you've seen the movie Awakenings with Robin Williams...those patients were mostly (in the real life story it was based on) survivors of the 1918 influenza pandemic.

Many historians believe that Hitler was crazy (and had Parkinson's) because he was a flu survivor.

Don't underestimate it.

I agree with not taking it lightly. More people die from it each year than anyone expects. Simple things like hand washing, and not touching your eyes, nose or face can help a lot. You would be surprised how many times you rub your eyes or nose over the course of a day. If you touched a grocery cart or door handle while out then you just gave the germs a way into your body. It may be common sense but most people don’t have very much of it.

General rule I use is to avoid crowds. I avoid most 'public' stuff. Same for kids/schools, the classroom is the best possible way of spreading disease like wildfire.

And I do laugh at the flu vaccine. I think it can cause as many problems as it helps. I think avoiding crowds & doing as Religar mentioned are much more effective.

Hand washing is important. I work in a medical office and we have hand sanitizer out. You wouldn't believe the number of people that take a bath in hand sanitizer instead of washing their hands. There are rooms, bathroom, that have sinks with hot water, and plenty of soap...and people reach for the alcohol (hand sanitizer). The old people are the ones that I really get me. They think they are extra protected by using it.. no, all they are doing is drying their hands out (on their already dry skin) and leaving more openings for germs to get in. The workers get in a panic if someone comes in with flu. They wear masks and bomb the place with Lysol.....but they go to Walmart and other places with not a care in the world. They touch door handles , shopping carts, and money...not a problem, but let someone come in the office sick, and they act like it is Ebola wrapped in SARS.
