Around here, in the Ozarks, many people practice traditional 19th century crafts as a way of life. There's even an Ozark Folk Center with a craft village dedicated to keeping those skills alive, staffed by masters and apprentices who practice them. We also have a significant Mennonite population who aren't as dependent on technology and the comfort society, either.

I have a few friends here close by that while things are as they are now are pretty good friends but if it goes to hell they know where I live and what I have they will become a major concern,I may end up having to defend myself from them,if I had a place I could move to,it might be wiser to get away from those who know you,,,,safety in numbers is not always going to be a true statement

I'd like, if SHTF, to know that I have somebody in my network who is an expert at things rather than a jack of all trades: a good mechanic or two, electrician, carpenter, plumber, some military veterans, et cetera. In between now and then I could use a good lawyer and accountant friend, and I'm friendly with local and County law enforcement, which will be useful when, or if, it happens, too. That's why I'm in favor of networking, but different courses for different horses.

We even have a few Menonites living near here, couple of em used to use a UK preppers site I used. I like those re-enactment 18 th century Rendezvous that many Americans do living for a few weeks at a time like Mountain Men, living in Teepees, cooking with cast iron pots, hunting only with muskets.

well Billy in a world gone mad,I don't know how far you can trust anyone who is not family,,,,even the best of people can go bad and to tell the truth until you are in that boat you can not be sure how anyone will act

Oh, I know, but even after SHTF someone will be rebuilding and reconsolidating resources. I'd like it to be someone I'm close to. And in the meantime, I plan on learning as much as I can IRL from people I know face to face who are like-minded. We'll have access to resources, assets, and skillsets that others want.

I live in a country where people rely on the system and rely on technology, if and when either of those go squit many will not survive and even if they do they wont know how to do anything without the internet, no sir, i'll keep myself to myself and wait for the "dying time" to take its course, no strangers for me, strangers= danger-that is my motto.

Been watching this thread since I signed up, and its interesting to see how its evolved.

Anyway.

Paul. Got a question for ya. If you keep to yourself how do you find people that complement your skills and allow you to build new ones?

After I got out of the Corps I wanted to retrest back inside my very small circle. But didnt. And thats a good thing, cause if I had I would not be in the position I am and would still be just working another job to make ends meet instead of running and actually growing my own business.

easy answer, I don't. i'm going for the simple life.
i'm not anticipating rebuilding civilisation, just looking out for myself.

ok,here we go,,,,now I have the gift of gab,I can talk to and get along with almost anyone and when I was running my own business it served me well,,,,but if things do go bad I take no chances I withdraw from the world and go it alone,in a modern country where people are used to modern living, all the little goodies that make life nice take that away and you have the making for disaster which equate into theft murder and gangs,,,,who do you trust,,,,who do you dare trust,,,,,,,,,,,,,in my opinion there will be a period of time where mob rule will be the norm,,,,I prefer to avoid the madness and go it alone,,,am I wrong to think this way, maybe but it is a choice each must make for their self

how right you are.

I don't disagree with what you're saying for after stuff goes wrong. But i was asking Paul about being secluded before things go bad like was alluded to in his post.

I know a lot of survivalists have the hermit mindset. I guess for me, just surviving isn't enough. Somebody is going to rebuild society, no matter how bad the SHTF is. There are going to be refugees and marauders, and people who will organized will, in my opinion, have a better chance against them than lone wolves. Quantity sometimes does overwhelm quality.

Here's an interesting article on the subject: http://shtfschool.com/survival-questions/lone-wolf-life-expectancy/

it all depends on the survival rate, in a time when most are reliant on the system and on technology, that isn't going to be very high.
in past times when civilisations collapsed people were able to access their daily needs by their own labour and simply wait for civilisation to reassert itself-no matter how long it took, that is not possible these days.

I don't have much to do with other people, I don't have the inclination, most people bore me. I prefer being alone, i prefer animals to people. animals don't let us down like people do.
I used to speak to some people when dog walking but now we don't have a dog any more I don't.

People dont let people down when you choose em right and do right by them. Least not the ones I've encountered. But I'm selective with whom I become close to.

Meh. I dont pick my friends based on their political beliefs or wjat type of bike they ride. I only ask if they decide to have a political debate with me then use reasonand logoic instead if emotion. And if their bike leaks rice then theyre expected to sweep it up before they leave my garrage.

I cant say that I've encountered many socialists that are trustworthly enough to call friend though.
