Hello everyone,

We get a large amount of snow where we live and last winter it got me thinking, what are some of the advantages to living in an area with snow?

Some of the things that I've thought about is the access to water. All you have to do is take a metal cup outside, fill it up and melt it and you have water. The other thought I had about it is that if the SHTF then you'd have a sorta natural barrier between you and others. With no one clearing the roads, vehicles won't be able to drive and people will be forced onto snowmobiles or on foot.

Has anyone thought about any other advantages to having a snow storm during an extended SHTF?

Obviously there are disadvantages but this thread should just be for advantages

the weight of snow and/or ice will bring down trees and branches.those can either be left as is,to block access to the property from the spring to fall.then there's what can be used as fire wood...

snow makes the surrounding very quiet, any movement will be heard and you can track game easier too.

have a few ideas, but it will take some serious manpower to fix it,for example build a road to NOWHERE and end it,if any one (bad ones) use it,they won't come far as you can block that path by simply using large trees as road blocks, but it takes more than one to do so..

Snow makes it easier to track game when hunting. Every animal that passes leaves a story in the snow, if you know how to read it.
You can use snow to pack in the chest cavity of a big game animal to speed down the cooling.
Snow also is a good insulator if you need to build a shelter. It can keep you warmer in really cold temps.
Cold temps dry out wood, even if buried in snow, making it easier to build a fire. It's much easier to start a fire at -20 than at 32 and raining.
I run a trap line in winter. It's much easier (for me) to run it on snowshoes, skis, or snow machine than mucking around in the mud.
In a SHTF scenario I wouldn't expect to see many of the city masses getting too far in 2-3 feet of snow. Or the 5-8 feet where I am.
