i wont beat you up for it bud, but do wish you'd quit just for your own sake. I too don't really want to live too old as I have enough aches and pains allready, but I'd like to have as much quality of life as I can while here.

Me to, we will proactively encourage you to eat licorice or aniseed sweets instead of smoking (thats the after taste you crave) ............ right which orifice do you want the rough end of a pineapple shoving :) to encourage you to stop?

FYI not only will you save money but it will improve your job prospects because many EU health agencies wont employ smokers, and you will live longer and your private insurances will be cheaper, and our wives wont crush your nuts in a vice :)

At least you were smart enough to walk! The driving drunk is still a big problem here. I don't care if someone wants to risk them killing themselves, just not risk hurting others. I use a glass of wine each night to help fall asleep. I guess it's my sedative. But you are right with way too many people not being able to control themselves with it.
i dont know if there is much drink driving here the days, it became very anti social and frowned upon, the current thing here now is driving whilst using a hand held mobile phone, its illegal but outside of the big cities we don't have the cops to police it, so they carry on doing it, caused a few accidents, some fatal, nationally.

I drove into Atlanta in the new work truck yesterday. It sits up high so you can look down at all the cars around you. I bet a third were texting while going 60+ mph

yep that's the thing, every time I go out I see someone driving with their mobile phone pressed up against their ear driving with one hand, and i'm in a rural area.

and as part of this new training plan, I've started a smoke strike :)
one day at a time and if there happens a relapse I won't slit my wrists for it,just try again.
That really is the secret to quitting my friend, just don't give up if you slip. When I quit I remember just getting through one craving at a time. At first you'll get cravings every 10 mins or so. They only last one to two minutes. All you gotta do is get through that one minute or so, then it eases off. The cravings will get further apart each day too, and get less intense each day. In three weeks your not free of it all, but it gets a lot easier. Good luck and my best wishes to you.

well, during a physical I discovered a disturbing issue. I have a part of my heart that isn't getting enough oxygen. I'm only 52! I guess too much fried chicken in my lifetime.... So at 7 am tomorrow morning I'm going to have a heart cath to see where the blockage is and what to do about fixing it.
The moral of this story is get regular check ups. If I had put it off a heart attack would have been likely before long. Once you have one the muscle in that part of your heart dies and never comes back. Catching stuff early can make a huge difference in the outcome. I just kind of think of checkups as I do with any of my preps.

Good catch and good advice.
about 18 months ago I started feeling off. I would get light headed standing up suddenly.
Also I'd get tired easily.
One afternoon about three months later (yes I know I put it off far too long), I almost passed out when getting up from sitting.
So I said to the wife "I think a trip to the ER is in order".
They took me right in of course and hooked me up.
My heart rate was down in the 30's when it should have been twice that.
After some test the doc said "you need a pacemaker".
So I didn't have a heart attack, the blockage of the electrical signal was likely caused by an infection according to the cardiologist.
It's an easy procedure, practically no pain post surgery.

So today I get my regular 6 month pacemaker checkup.
I feel great.

Now my challenge is I'm 63, overweight, have back pain. How the heck do I get in shape?

Baby steps. When people make drastic changes they rarely stick. Just start making minor adjustments a little at a time.

Walking is one of the best things you can do. Start out with short trips and then as you feel up to it walk a little further. Swimming is another great way to get in shape. For your back pain, have you tried a massage therapist? Years ago I had severe back pain from getting kicked in the back by a 2,000 pound draft horse. I found a little Filipina massage girl in town and she worked on my back. Very painful at first but I haven't had back pain in years. And of course eat a healthy diet.

Walking and swimming are two of the best things you can do, if you can get in a pool or other sources where the water meets the lower rib-cage and just walk for 30 minutes a day it will build strength and help the lower back while taking pressure off the joints and swim for 15 minutes after the walk. My wife had to do that after a fall (amateur mistake she didn't set the line correctly while dangling over a cliff) The doctor had her do that to help with hip, back and knee. She would use the sauna after the pool, she done the whole regimen for a year, today she has no pain or joint issues though the hardest part was sticking to it thus becoming irritable at times. As long as the family has an understanding and willing to help through the process ignoring the mood swings the end results are an 180 ;)
