we lost our nearly 14 year old terrier tuesday last just before 3pm, so we are dog less for the time being, we are pretty upset as you can imagine, she wasn't just our friend, our buddy, our companion but our watch dog, sniffer dog, tracker dog and all round best mate.
know how it feels mate :(

My dogs do nothing until told to.
Big Paul I'm so sorry..
So if someone comes to the door that the dogs don't know do they stay with you until you tell them what to do I was wondering because I have seen some dogs that if they pick up on someone coming they are going to the door to check them out

Mine (big and small) go ape if someone comes to the door. The big dog, will take an aggressive stance if the person isn't known (he can somehow usually tell, through the door...I don't know how). The little dogs, will just yip loudly. Typically, we leash the big dog, or just put him out in the dog yard, before answering the door.

My dogs are well trained. If I'm home they take no action without permission. If I'm not home then good luck.

mine was an excellent watch dog, would tell you someone was approaching long before they got to the door, she would also stand on her hind feet and sniff the air when out on our country walks. I do miss her, our whole life revolved around her, she was part of the family, she was number 3 in this family.

Sorry to hear about your dog brother I know know what it is like to lose one it like loosing a member of the family just wondering what kind of terrier was yours I was asking because i have heard a lot of them make good watch dogs and also have a history of being small game hunting dogs

So I was starting to think that a German Shepherd would be a good one if we want the guard dog route but then I found out my wife has been thinking she likes the Rottweiler dog so I promised I would do some looking around and see what I could find out about them so if any of you all have had one or know someone who has had one would like to know what you think of them the big parts are how they do with kids and other animals and if they can learn to leave company alone when you call them off

Cairn Terrier.

Thanks Roninsensei I was hoping you might know something about them since you have trained dogs have you ever heard of them having trouble with other dogs and cats the little bit I can find about them said if a Rottweiler puppy is bringing up with kids around they can get more protective of the kids then they are over the grownups does that sound like what you have seen
