My wife and I are always toying with the idea of code phrases in case we need to communicate under duress, or discreetly for whatever reason. We have a few simple hand signs worked out for movement, but the best thing I think we have is a simple "call and response" identification system for each other.

The best way to explain this is to reference Saving Private Ryan. While in enemy occupied territory, the Allies in the movie use a call and response system to ID friendly troops in the crummy visibility of that ruined and rainy town. When they saw or heard someone approaching, they would call out "Thunder!" If the approaching soldiers responded with "Lightning" then everything was dandy. If there was no response or an incorrect response, the soldiers would open fire.

I'm not going to tell you what ours is but its personal to us and therefore easy to remember. The phrase we chose is also not intuitive, meaning the first answer you'd think to give to this challenge is not the correct one. I highly recommend any prepper groups or couples come up with their own Call and Response. Even in the event of a home intrusion it can keep you from accidentally hurting a loved one when the lights go out and the adrenaline surges.

I've seen on TV and YouTube that some people have a code phrase for bugging out; this seems a little silly to me, but to each their own. I do wish my wife and I had more codes in place than the hand signs and the C&R though. The trick is getting things you'll remember without a whole lot of practice, and that aren't phrases you'll find yourself wanting to commonly use.

all of that is great..and 1 thought came to mind..what if 1 person is home, and has to bug out while the other is at work or shopping? and because of the situation, the one bugging out cant call or what ever for safety reasons?.then that means leaveing ceartain item(s) at a ceartain location.just to let the other person(s) know that they had to bug out.and that they went to the agreed on meeting place.or bugout location..and all the other(s) have to do..is look at it and know where the other person(s) is..and if there's 3 or more ppl in said family/group..then the others simply add 1 item to it,to let the other(s) know that they have been there and know the loction to go to..

That's a great idea Jim, I'll have to discuss it with my wife and see what we can come up with. We have a coatrack hanging from a door in our living room, wouldn't be too hard to flip it to the other side of the door as a signal but she might not be able to reach it easily. Easy for me and easy for her are two different things haha.

Every family should have code phrases and signals such as special signals outside the home such as a specific light that should only be on in an emergency to notify unsuspecting family members etc...
yeah.thats what i was thinking.have a certain light on.or move a certain peice of out side furneture.or have a curtain open.to let be known thats it's not safe to go into the house, for what ever reason(s)..

Shepherd to lost sheep. Shepherd to lost sheep....
(stupid auto correct made it law for some reason)

FYI; if one is going to keep a secret a secret and for some reason one needs to text code-phrases or code words be aware of triggers ;) if one needs to alert his or her partner that the feds or other LE officials to the fact someone is waiting for them don't use these, in a SHTF whose friend or foe?Feds? LE?, the list of words, phrases are a trigger to programs like Echelon.

Broadsword calling Danny Boy, Broadsword calling Danny boy :)

My family adopted the two word trigger code from the book Alas Babylon by Pat frank as the " trigger word" to come home immediately and get into full prepper mode, it can be sent either by phone or text to family members and they know exactly what steps they must take immediately.

Not related, but my favorite movie code phrase of all time is from Clear and Present Danger. A covert ops team has just planted a bomb in a hangar full of planes used for cocaine smuggling. The operator gets on his radio and says "The chicken is in the pot." His commander replies: "Cook it." Boom!

haha i use the thunder and lightning when i'm in the store with my fiance. the first few times she didnt answer me she got a firm slap on the butt...she now answers when i call.

code phrases are a great idea. an example of a use is my platoon used cheeseburger for explosives in Iraq. so if one of us said hey lets go get a cheeseburger we all knew it was time to discreetly exit the building from the nearest exit.

the jacket and coat rack is a great idea.i went into a army/navy surplus a year or 2 ago.in which i got a 2 sided jacket..in which both sides has pockets..1 side is camo.and the other side is a bright orange..in which some thing like that can be used as a signal.camo for one thing, orange for something else..

Since my wife will make it home before I do, we have a code for me arriving to the ranch.

If I say one thing, she knows all is normal (even if I'm with others, say some other people I got along the way)...

If I say another, she knows to shoot them or poison everyone elses drinks (if I'm with others who are coercing me, who followed me home, etc.)

Remind me not to pop in for a coffee :)

One mix up on the code word and you could have bodies to hide in the FL swamps .
