I got a ton of leaves in the garden area, just mounded up until I'm ready to spread and till them in. I also have the rabbit cages in the garden, with mounds of pellets to till in as well. Today I bought some asparagus to try again with, (3tries so far), and a large bag of red potatoes and white onions. I'm itching to plant, but with two days of snow starting tonight think it may be wise to wait a little. Anyone else have any good prep ideas for pre planting?

my contribution for the garden has been so far;planning what to grow, order some nice "burnt horse poo" to mix in the soil when spring comes. don't need to pre plant yet,but have everything in place for that too....just have to wait a while longer

I guess planning is as important as everything else. I've been keeping records of what was planted, and what did well, or didn't. So at least that helps me with a blueprint of what to do this year. It's definately too early to plant, aside from onions and carrots, but I did get rid of a mouse in the greenhouse with a little peanut butter on a trap! We got three inches of snow today, and are expecting another three tomorrow, so planting is still a ways off. I'm thinking about starting some tomatoes inside so they can get a jump start. Luckily I still have plenty of canned tomatoes, green beans, carrots, beets, corn, squash, zukes. I also have several freezer bags of corn on the cob, hot peppers, bell peppers and some zuke and yellow squash. All this stuff has been great over the winter, but I'm really missing a fresh tomatoe right now.

I tilled and planted some asparagus and white onions in the greenhouse yesterday. I mentioned before that I've planted asparagus about three times so far, with no success. This time I did more prep to give it a fighting chance.
I did grape cuttings in the fall, and potted 100 vines in potting soil which have been in the greenhouse all winter. I can't wait until it warms up and I get to see how many actually root and begin to grow leaves. I plan to plant every fence line and do a few more lines of them. Now that I know which varieties grow with little to no maintenance, I may start to remove and replace some of the ones that were not suited for the conditions here.
I just heard of a gmo plant that sounded interesting. It's a tomatoe plant that grows potatoes too. It's nicknamed ketchup and fries! I'm going to try and get some! I'm not against all gmo research. I think crossing plants is fine, but what moron came up with the idea of corn with insecticide built in. Did no one ever think it may kill the people eating it as well as the bugs? A lot of people get on the organic kick, and that's fine, but don't get so caught up thinking that all science is bad. Some ideas can be good.

a tomato plant that grows potatoes too.?....im not sure i wanna go there with that one..lol..sounds like that your doing good with the grapes and vines..good luck with the asparagus and white onions

We live in town so I don't have a "real" garden. Last year I planted veggies & herbs in my flower beds. I want to expand my flower beds so I can plant more. I've been waiting for the rain/snow/ice to go away so I can plant some lettuce, but it doesn't seem to want to go away.

I should plant a flower someday, but so far have only played with things I can eat! Even in a small space you can produce alot more than most people think.

Im hoping I can find one to try this year! This weekend I'm going to try and till the garden and get the potatoes in. Ill do a little more research to see how cold hearty they are first though.

I got the greenhouse completely planted this weekend. It's packed to the gills! I'm going for the jungle look :). I learned something from a friend today. I've planted celery a couple times and never had any seeds germinate. My friend said take a bunch of store bought celery and cut it a couple inches above the base and bury it with 1/2 inch over the top. I had one bunch in the fridge, that I squeezed into the greenhouse. I'll let you know how well it goes. He said it will sprout in about three or four days, and keeps coming back year after year. I'm so glad to start growing again! I can't wait to get the regular garden going too.

We started some seedlings in our inside greenhouse. The compost is thawing and is almost ready to be mixed...
I tilled in a bunch of leaves into the soil in both the greenhouse and garden. It probably would have been better to let them compost a year, but I figure they will break down in the soil as well. I really don't know crap about growing, but am having fun experimenting! Each year I am getting better though. I still have loads of green beans, tomatoes, okra, pickles, carrots, apples, zuccini, squash, and beets canned from last year. I also have bell and hot peppers, squash and zuccini and corn vaccum freezer bagged. Gardening really has helped me eat alot better. I rarely go out for fast food anymore.

That's awesome Brent. Unfortunately, a financial snafu is pushing back my garden plans. Though I will still work on the fencing and prep for the area (including rain catchment, and watering hookups).

I'm still doing the medicinal/cooking herb garden though, this spring.

The greenhouse is starting to sprout! I had a few things left from the winter crop, but replanted most of it. I almost finished tilling the main garden, but it was still too wet and I was just mixing leaves in the mud. Some of the potatoes are beginning to sprout! It's also good to see the peach trees blooming. There the pink, and I have about ten plums that are blooming white. Spring is definately my favorite season. It's just good to see a new cycle of life starting again.
