Americans living in the eastern U.S. have certainly been feeling the cold this past week, but now they can see it.

This weekend, NASA released a satellite photo which shows the Midwest and East Coast turned white with snow and ice thanks to a recent blast of Siberian and Arctic air.

'Looks like the states have been sitting in a freezer,' the space agency said in a statement.

The picture was taken by NASA's Terra satellite 200 miles up from Earth on Friday when record low temperatures were set across the nation including in Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina and Georgia.

Any hopes of a big thaw should be retired for the time being. Another 'Siberian Express' weather system is forecast to hit Sunday, causing a rain-and-snow storm to hit parts of the East Coast and South.

Shivering states: This satellite image was taken 200 miles up from Earth on Friday, when record low temperatures were set across much of the Midwest, East Coast and South

Six inches or more of fresh snow was forecast for parts of the Northeast by early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Bitter cold is also expected, but conditions should start to ease in many areas by mid-morning, the service said.

Boston, which had already been hit by 98.7 inches of snow going into the weekend, saw only about an inch Saturday, but local weather watchers there were forecasting the total tally to hit 100 inches by midnight. The city's total is well above the average yearly total of 31 inches

The new round of harsh weather is part of a system that has cut a curving, 2,000-mile path from southern Missouri to Maine.

Snow and ice contributed to major delays at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York Saturday, with some arriving flights delayed more than two hours, and flights destined for Newark International Airport in New Jersey were delayed more than three hours, according to a Federal Aviation Administration advisory.

Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings were in effect until Sunday for parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire, the NWS said.

The system dropped steady snow on Washington and Baltimore as it pushed up the East Coast Saturday. West Virginia saw 18 inches of snow, according to state officials.

how far south do you usually have a winter like this?

Well, I'm in FL, and on the coldest day, I had let some faucets drip, to keep the pipes from freezing. Came out in the morning, and an icicle had formed under each one, that went about a foot high. And, they stayed for most of the day, until the afternoon.

Coldest winter I've seen yet. Previously, I had to have the heater on for maybe a few days each winter. Been a lot more than that this year. We also blanket the horses at 55 degrees or lower, and we've had to do that a lot more. We don't have heaters in the stables, but then, they are generally about 10 degrees warmer than outside anyhow, if we close up the windows and storm door.

...and here we have spring, a clear night and 54deg, across the US like here not totally unusual just doesn't happen very often. I swear most of the meteorologist and reporters were born yesterday (literally) given the 'shock' attitude like this sort of things doesn't happen in America? apparently they flunked history!

same here,we're supposed to have cold and brutal winter now,but temps go up to 6C/42F when it should be -20C/-4F..no wonder they have winter gear on sale...this happens every now and then..it's the weather.

I think it's about 22 days till spring, stay positive! It's about 4 inches of fresh powder out there and I'm still debating on going to work or not. I have about two miles to make it to a well maintained road, with a lot of curves and hills. I'm still waiting for the sun to come up and see what it looks like on the road, but it sure is beautiful on the property.

Here once the sun came up the roads cleared but the snow is sitll on the ground . Western eadge of the same storm .

we're suppose to be going into town friday..but because of last nights weather report.we have our doubts about going.on acount the roads might be iced over.driving 35 miles each way, aint worth getting your hair done up right..

I made it in today, but the refreeze tomorrow may be worse. My trek into work today was two treacherous miles to the main road, then about thirty miles an hour on the plowed roads. It took some digging and a few attempts to get out the driveway first. Yup, I'm ready for spring.

i'll be logging into the local tv station web site in the morning before heading out.this way i'll know if it's safe to head out or not..

There saying there's black ice everywhere (the sky is falling!). The news media sure does like to create drama. If you do go out, for goodness sake, drive slowly, it's winter still.

thats one reason id be going, and driving..my moms bursitis in her hands will most n likely be to bad for her to control the van like she needs to.that is if there is any type of ice at all..mainly the black ice..i already checked the road conditions one time this morning.and it's going as they predicted so far.

I really don't miss snow, when I read these....not at all....

I miss it some what..but yet, that's mainly because i still enjoy making snowmen.but mainly because i love taking pic's of it.
