Ma'am, you sure our husbands aren't related somehow? What is it about men and their dang sweet corn?

Lol they must be...by the looks of things....there are a lot of my hubbys relatives on this site. lol
But glad to hear I am not the only one who goes thru this lol

Ah okay. I was hoping that was the method you were talking about. A few years back people decided that they could can everything in the oven; veggies, meats, soups, you get the picture. Anyhow, it's a disaster in the making because the temps and pressure just isn't there to make the foods safe.

For low acid foods, the safest way of doing it is with a pressure canner. I can remember open kettle canning when I was a child, but that is deemed unsafe by the usda.

YAY i did it right!
The info that i read basically told me that I could can food this way if they were already 'dry'-so i am assuming baking supplies like flour, rice, dry beans ect.
The info I read told me not to do anything with oils in them because they will go rancid. I am gonna try dry canning oatmeal this weekend- I think i could live off that stuff forever if I had a little bit of fresh fruit to change it up a bit. I am gonna try other kinds of canning too, just need to do more research before I start

Honestly, I don't fool with that. I just put everything into buckets I get from the bakeries that have the rubber seals and I've not had any trouble with anything but cornmeal.

good idea...i am not on that big of a scale yet---right now i am just messing around with different ideas/types of stuff- trying to make myself a more well rounded person i guess. But you can bet when I get to that point, I will be bugging you with a ton of questions! lol

Ah...makes sense. My bucket foods are rice, beans, dried corn, popcorn, dry pasta, and mashed potato flakes.

Nothing wrong with that. Previously, with 3 of us, I was at about 3 months worth of stored food each. Now, with 5 of us all of a sudden (stepkids moved in), I'm down to 1 month (which I hate), so my plan is to be back up to 3 months each by the end of the year. Then, halfway into next year, be at about 6 months worth per person, and at a year by the end of next year. (then just add from there as much as possible and as room allows). I have to budget it too, hence the time factor. Maybe sooner, depending on how the garden grows, and our canning efforts.

All of my preps are done within a timeline, so I know what I'm working on when. (and they all have a decent, immediate benefit). I try to stick to it as close as I can, but things come up (good or bad).

we get our mashed potato flakes at sams club.dont recall how much they cost.but they do come in 1 gallon cartins

Well nearly all the women in my life, be it family to wife. Like to can food, clip coupons, and crochet. So rather than throwing around the name prepper with the show giving some people the idea were all coo coo. I found getting involved with the preps she was already doing helped us connect. The mormons from her native AZ believed in food stores. Just don't label it prepping. Then start with ideas for saving money like the coupons. Say solar panels, wood burning stoves using lump coal.

Then start with the disasters. We have family in Colorado so it was a big topic. Fires back in AZ and CA. Not to mention the 4-5 times we drove thru Jopline, MO only to see it virtually wiped off the face of the earth by an Ef5 multiple vortex tornado.

Just ease into it if you can. Don't overwhelm. I found the wife was more than happy to run with the basics. Left the more obscure things like Faraday cages to my own personal projects. Building a root cellar but didn't mention gonna nuke proof it. When she asked I showed here a map of all the nuclear plants within easy driving distance and said Fukushima, 3-mile island, chernobyl. My wife is very supportive though. But that's my 2-cents

My wife thought I was nuts when I started 5 yrs. ago digging out our Cave Home apartment in the mountain but when still living in a rental home in december 2011 a Dam from a reservoir broke during a storm with heavy rainfall and in the middle of the night at 1 am our house flooded with 8 ft water within 45 min? I woke up with my feet hitting the water next to the bed already 6 inches high, woke them up and got them outside as fast as I could and via the pickup next to the house got them on the roof? Nobody could swim offcourse? After 6/7 hrs the water had drained out of the village but when we got of the roof and into the house we had lost everything, laptops, phones, fridge, ect? Truck had 3 ft water on the roof but I cleaned it out, drained engine and fueltank and got it running again and we moved to the mountain to our Cave Home, after that she's convinced that prepping is a wonderfull thing to do and she and my daughters are helping with all the work, being happy we had the fresh drinking water spring and food storage as all the stores were empty for 10 miles around?? Now we're Happy Preppers ?

My wife was always only ever semi involved in my preps, she never objected to me buying and storing gear or turning our vacations into training trips, but she only ever sought to be a good wife. Then she read the first two books from 299 days series by Glen Tate, then she read Patriots by Jim Rawles. Now she is all out into prepping. Demand we buy a another 4x4 and a van, wanting extra storage, its driven her to lose weight, do more swimming, learning how to preserve food etc

to be honest,I would love to have someone prepping with me,but it's a great joy to read about your success.

My wife is ok, but she thinks I'm in way too much of course. I think I've always been all in or nothing with most thing in my lifetime. For me to dedicate my time and energy into anything I have to believe in it, and prepping is just the right thing to do. I feel it in my gut. Even if I never have an emergency in my lifetime, I like having the insurance policy of my preps to give me peace of mind. I know I could last at least six months, and probably a year without working. That's a good piece of mind to have.

Some days I think I am way more into it than my hunny. . . . You do what you feel is right no matter what. When the time comes as in a certain situation the other person is always happy for the extra, but want to complain about the scarifies to get there. Y0u cant have it both ways sometimes. . . either you do it or you don't.

At first Lisa was reluctant, when we married she moved in on the property and become overwhelmed with the stock and redundancy I had in place and my purchasing spree. The house she has in town she now keeps stocked and now she is wanting to go from a 30 day stock to 90 days, what helped getting her completely on-board was asking her opinion and making it count and that I structured our preps around her comfort (within reason) and concerns (kids and animals) I don't get cold easily but she does (very cold-blooded) thus I made adjustments to our preps to accommodate adding a little more weight to our bags with heavier clothing, sleeping bag, communications etc... Going with the attitude 'my-way or the highway' ain't going to help getting a spouse on-board ;)

Yes, I still get the 'side eye' from time to time :)

My wife is pretty ill, so long term isn't something she dwells on. She is amazingly tolerant with me wanting to prepare and spending time and resources on prepping though. I do talk with her, and include preps with her in mind, which helps. Why else would I buy a years worth of air freshener? She is on board with most things, understanding of emergencys and life changing events. My biggest fear for her is continuity of medical care. I can't prepare for everything, but will keep trying to cover as many bases as I can.

'continuity of medical care' is a big one for folks in need of specialized care, my ma needs special medication that is delivered to her every two weeks, they are unable or unwilling to give her a 30 day supply because of the expense with no substitute option from the pharmacies, I do know if she misses 2 days of taking the meds she doesn't have much time and would need to be taken to the hospital within 3 days after missing two days of taking the meds. We the kids talk about this all time 'what are we going to do' and it always boils down to a ?

I like trying to be in control of things, and I guess its important to know that when things aren't in our ability to control. My wife would probably be able to go 30 to 60 days or so without her medical support at best. She is my first priority, but there are lots of people out there in the same boat. It's good to remember to take one day at a time, and make the best of it.

Another tactic may be extreme couponing. A lot of times, to get the best deal, or even items for free, it involves getting a decent quantity of things. This is PERFECT for stockpiling and prepping. So, if your spouse gets into couponing, this can be an easy way to get a foot in the door towards prepping.
