do I trust me neighbour in the east?? hell no!!!

Yall nitice how we took the OP's original sales pitch and turned it into a 3 page conversation .

Psalm,

Are we that bad? I actually enjoyed reading every ones posts.

I noticed the guy who placed this post, took a defensive position on everything we pointed out. I get the guy was trying to make a commission, thinking he could just enter as a new member and entice each of simply because we were preppers. Granted, who wouldn't want something like that in the event of a nuclear blast. However, I don't think the facility realistically meets the planning requirements that we all see might happen in a real event. In fact, I find nuclear (MAD) the least of our worries. However, my point was simply that infrastructure could easily be defeated and was a security risk, requiring a competent defensive consultant to deter it from outside aggressors. I did find it hilarious, he used words like U.S. Special Forces and the other comment, which soured me from commenting any further. Wow, like I was impressed with the words U.S. Special Forces...you wouldn't anything that elite to take the facility down, just a determined force and as he commented, the owner had a plan in place. No offense, we all have plans, but I've learned not to place over the years everything into a stationary point.

As for bunkers, I've been a proponent for them, partially because I live in Tornado Alley (as I've said to some of our DPF members, realistically, that has a higher Z factor in determining my prep planning, rather than the nuclear fall-out issue. My stance only, bunkers or like facilities have and always be a temporary shelter, they are not meant to be cohabitated for extended periods, despite what those so called experts profess or the commercial builders state as the maximum time. I'd like to think of bunkers no different that the early sailing ships. The holds were dank, dirty and at times death traps...like many of us who are ardent followers of the theory that we must plan for self-sufficiency and protracted subsistence planning, I've often wondered how long a hydroponic bay using UV lighting will help my plants grow. I've played with oranges, lemons, apples, berries, not to mention most vegetables using UV and other methods underground. The yields have been somewhat up and down, and while I continue to test them and enter my data. I often wonder, when I see these commercial folks or the guy that used this post, why people believe they are simply safe behind thousands of tons of concrete or steel without having a redundant planning and logistical system.

In a follow-up comment: I know that our nuclear deterrent now revolves around a squadron of B-2 Bombers and the Ohio boats. The three active missile wings have been in the news lately, with everything from the general being removed to the cheating scandal with missile officers. I still believe it would be simply madness to launch our inventories unless we wanted to create a dead world. I think the leaders in the 60's and 80's, both realized it. Possibly also, why the United States still has analog communication systems in their missile command centers as their only means to communicate with the "Go Codes". Note: One good thing is that with analog, your not going to have the Chinese hack into it.

I've read many comments on this one and smiled to think we are all singing pretty much off the same page, hence why I think the guy, knew he was not going anywhere with us, possibly also why he hasn't returned since September. I have always appreciated DPF member's solidarity and friendship. One of the few markings of a great website and why we continue to learn from each other.

Not everyone really needs a bunker though. If you're far enough away from targets and far enough away from nuclear power plants, your need for weathering the radiation may be nearly non-existent. Of course, "needing" and having are two different things. I'd love to have a bunker, but just couldn't justify the expense, at least not over other more pressing preps.

As for an eventual nuclear attack, I believe it is inevitable. Not a full on strike, that's pretty remote....but that an isolated nuclear terrorist attack would occur? Almost a certainty...eventually, in my book. Just a matter of where and when, and that's exactly why it's a bad idea to live in a major target city. Then again, who would have assumed a bombing in Boston?

Silent Bob nothing meant as bad just noticing how we took a nowhere post and turned it into something useful . Other than my type'O nitice instead of notice .
Yea Gaz I think some crazy will use nukes either in a grand scale or isalated terorist .

took and did that test, even with a small terrorist bomb it would take out 50% of my capital...

i could be up a creek if a 10.4 MT was used on houston..but thats from the the wind blown fallout

10kt or 10mt jontte?

That's pretty unlikely though, as the standard missile warhead is more like 2-3 megatons these days. Of course, it's hard to predict what effect multiple overlapping ones would have...but still, you'd probably only get wind blown fallout, and still likely out of range for much of it. Texas does have some strong winds though too, so even if it does reach you, probably won't be for long exposure.

wind blown fallout is my concern.i did a 2 or 3 as well.and wind blown can still be a issue.but not any where near as much.but yet the wind blown is more narrow.in which that is a big plus...so i might get just a lil bit from it.even then i dont think that lil bit is worth worrying about

I did that calculus with the 10kt terrorist device

Can't quite swing 5 mil for the bunker in the OP? Here you go, a bargain bunker for only 3 million: :D
http://online.wsj.com/articles/for-sale-renovated-luxury-condo-can-survive-nuclear-attack-1415575922

let me get this straight, they take the silo itself (the vertical shaft), add 14 or 15 floors inside the silo using modern civilian skyscraper construction techniques, so, if the soviets sorry russians still has this listed on its target plans thus the russians drop a 3mt ground burst bomb on or close to this silo all them floors won't pancake ontop of one another? hmm

I want the russians to test this thing before I invest that kind of money.

That's just it. Some mobile launcher that has been driving through the Soviet wilderness for 30 years, likely has target coordinates that are who knows how old... Some aging computer in the Kremlin sends out the order and target choice (probably dating from the Cold War), and for all we know, this missile launches on its way to an old missile silo that is now a condo.

That would suck.

Yikes, well on the bright side, you just might have enough time to leave a cool shadow on a nearby wall!
So, you're in this area?

yup,my office is more or less straight under that nice looking nuke dot ;)

if it happens atleast I will make a permanent shadow...

might try having a life size pic of your self printed up..then past it to wall some where.30 to 40 minutes ahead of time..then get out while the getting out is good..lol

Wouldn't have that long. In fact, given jontee's stated location (in the nuclear fireball), if Helsinki is hit (by just about anything), he wouldn't even see the flash as a warning, before being vaporized. Hate to say..... At least it would be quick though. Those in the second circle will die in minutes to hours (depending on exposure, and how much of their bodies have 3rd degree burns). Those in the other circles will still receive lethal doses of radiation, burns, and more likely, simply have buildings crumble all around them. Either way, not a pleasant way to go...so far more fortunate in that original fireball.

this is the down side living in this small city...big enough to cause trouble in shtf...small enough to be vaporized...so lucky this place isn't high on any terrorist shit-list ;)

don't know what would happen if it would detonate in the metro, that's about 20 meters down in the bedrock,ok the metro wouldn't run for awhile and I sure don't wanna be on the platform when it says boom...
QH,this is perhaps a way of staying sane....though my colleagues think I'm slightly insane sometimes..
