There is only one native North American plant that contains caffeine, called yaupon, or the yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria). It is closely related to the yerba mate plant (Ilex paraguariensis) that is used to make a popular caffeinated drink in South America. Indians in the Southeastern United States made what was called the "Black Drink" from yaupon when preparing for battle.
