i heard the first reports last night of 20 people killed, by this morning it was 200. This was nothing like the one year back that killed so many more, but still a sad loss of life and property. I wish them the best with the recovery.
What suprised me was there was no warning for the locals. They have earthquake monitors for their warning system now. So far they believe this was triggered by an underwater landslide, from volcanic activity. Which made their system useless in this instance. All the best intentioned technology to protect people and Mother Nature worked around it.

Why the earthquake monitor and not have the tsunami monitor? Mother Nature can be a mean old lady.

I read about a ships captains log that was written in the 188o’s during the big eruption from this volcano. At 75 miles from the mountain the sound was deafening, it was pitch dark for two days and the ship got 3” of mud/pumice debris on her decks. It was really interesting to hear their account, scary as hell for them I’m sure. It was the largest eruption in recorded history. Waves generated from it circled the globe 4 times before subsiding. It blew more than half the mountain away. The son of Krakatau as it’s called now has been growing or swelling 5” a day for some time now. I don’t think being anywhere near this thing is my idea of an island paradise.

This is a pretty remote area without lots of money or resources. I would imagine it is higher on their list now though. With the volcano being so close though I don’t know if there would be enough time to react to the warning though.

Not sure of the distance and money does pose a problem. Also not sure a wave monitor would have provided enough warning other than start running for the hills, literally.
