picking someone up off of the floor

Well,i did my good deed yesterday. By going over,and getting someone up off of the floor yesterday afternoon. First thing i did after seeing the immediate situation. I let her know exactly how we're gonna get her up off of the floor. Thats when i got behind her and wrapped my arms around her lower body,and stood up with her.

Very good deed Jim. I have had to lift mom off of a sitting position before which I had her wrap her arms around my neck while I pulled her up but when she was totally down on the floor I just didn't have the strength. She out weighs me by at least 70 lbs if not more like 80. I ended up bringing encyclopedias down the hall for her to climb up on to get her sit on the bed and then finally could get her up.

I've gotten tons of people up. You try to get them to do it first on their own by getting them on their knees and giving them a chair. They face the chair seat, and put the upper part of the body over on it and use their arms to push/pull. If they can get one knee up then it is much easier. For a full lift, it is a killer for one person, but if they don't weigh too much you can do it. Under the arms, don't let them grab around your neck and pull you down. I always say they aren't going to hurt themselves on the floor, they can stay there a bit till you figure out what to do. (as long as there are no injuries) No reason to hurry, calm down, the fall is over.
I always said once an older person starts falling a lot the deterioration seems to become increasingly more so.

I am most worried about when mom starts losing her upper body strength. She is handicapped and in a wheelchair. Her legs are almost like dead weight for her and she is not getting any younger. She is still able to get from the wheelchair into bed and the pot since her wheelchair arms now lift. Years ago the wheelchair arms didn't and she had to stand and pivot herself up and over. And then sometimes her legs would buckle or she would get a pinch in her back and go down.

Im thinking that you were in front of her when she put her arms around your neck.and that mesns you were bent over.I've learned that can injure the person thats helping the person in need of help.thats why i always get behind the person.then squat down and put my arms around them.and in the area of their lower rib cage.i not only avoid hurting myself. But it also makes easier for me to pick a person up off the floor.the woman i helped out.told me later on.that she whighs between 180 and 200 pounds.plus she wasn't able to use her legs to work with me at getting her up.thats another reason i'll pick a person up like i do.on account i wouldn't of been able to pick her up any other way.

nobody can pick me up off the floor, I weigh close to 18stone and that's a lot of lbs I can tell you.

Guess someone will be calling a wrecker service then..lol

Down the hill

I've had a couple of falls, usually because I tripped over something, once because it was slippery, and if I've got nothing to grab onto to haul myself up it takes 2 people.

Jim, save your strength because the baby-boomers are retiring and going to be millions and millions of us to pick up from the floor. Buy a truck and chain block, posts signs on the truck 'have chain block will travel'

If I could have gotten behind her at that particular time I would have. . . She had just had a colonoscopy at one of the old hospitals and had to go potty. The toilet was lower to the ground than any other I had seen before. There really wasn't even much room to side maneuver either. I thought about calling for a nurse to come help but that time I figured it was an embarrassing moment for her and if I could I would do it. There was a second time I did have to call for help. Same hospital, same procedure. Thankfully she was so high on drugs she didn't care at that time and even made a pass on the male nurse with her pants around her ankles. It's something she goes and has done every couple years. We no longer have to go to the old hospital, at least last time we got to go to the new one built.

Oh.Thats different then..lol
