It is amazing just how many of the younger generation do not know how to use a map or compass for that matter. Maybe I should be impressed if they just know where N, S, E & W are.

I like a GPS for hiking a strange area, but if they shut down maps are good to have and a compass will be darned handy, now I know this area I live in pretty well so around here I don't need one,,,if the SHTF and you have a safe zone get there and stay within you comfort zone

most people use sat navs these days, these aren't always best as they tend to send people the shortest route between A and B not necessarily the best route, post collapse these things may not function anymore, I don't like them as I have seen too many vehicles stuck or road traffic accidents in our narrow local lanes, I prefer paper maps.

In my area GPS is pretty unreliable. The mountains are too steep in many areas for good reception. And if a person were to enter my address in a GPS it would take them miles away from my place. I'm ok with that. My ranch does show up on topo maps though as a large white area (private) surrounded by green (National Forest).

I would expect gps would go down pretty quickly after shtf. However, in the mean time I friggin love google maps! I use it daily and can't imagine having to go back to paper maps. When it picks up an accident and routs around it, that's light years ahead of a paper map. If I live to see shtf I really am going to miss all our conviences.

I did D of E at school and that really helped me with my map reading and making route cards etc, it's been such a valuabke skill.

I'm not mega young, 34, I still remember what it was like to drive about the country pre sat navs. (although now I use google maps.)

That said some other people my age are totally totally clueless, wouldn't even know which way up to hold a map, let alone read it, it's so embarrasing as it's not exactly rocket science but they have no will to learn.

I have all the OS maps for my area and several others for areas I have gone walking/camping in, I am building up quite a collection actually.

wife went on a journey with a female friend who didn't use maps, wouldn't look at signposts but would only go on what her sat nav said, wife said it was the most horrendous car journey she had ever been on.
I wont have a sat nav I hate the things with a passion, I use maps.
